AGC Publishes Mold Handbook

After an exhaustive analysis and meticulous drafting, the AGC of America’s mold task force has released a new booklet to help you deal with mold.  Titled “Managing the Risk of Mold in the Construction of Buildings” this booklet is intended to assist owners, the designers and contractors in methods to identify and cure instances where mold can form and spread.  The booklet has been very careful not to place blame or risk shift, but allows you to open a dialog with building owners and design professionals involved in the construction process.  It is currently being forwarded to various building owner and design associations for their comments and endorsement.

AGC of America Provides Mold Resources on the Web

AGC of America has posted the Mold materials that they presented at the National Convention on their website at: http://www.agc.org/safety_info/mold_guidance.asp.  Topics posted include a link to the AGC mold handbook, and to presentations that were given at the national convention in March.

AGC of Greater Milwaukee and AGC of Wisconsin Join Forces on Mold

On April 10th, 2003, AGC of Greater Milwaukee and AGC of Wisconsin mold taskforces held their first combined meeting.  Numerous items were discussed and it was decided that we would join forces to address the mold issue.

  • The newly released mold handbook was reviewed in detail.

  • A guest from WE Energies discussed the school energy evaluation program.

  • The decision was made to combine forces between the Milwaukee and Wisconsin AGC chapters.

  • Gert Grohmann reviewed the rapid response team proposal and it was decided we would move forward with input from the taskforce.

How Can I Keep Mold Out of My Projects?

According to all of the available literature on mold, the first 24 to 48 hours after discovering a water event, are critical in preventing a water event from becoming a mold nightmare.  However, it can be difficult to react that quickly if a person is not familiar with the resources available.  Therefore, as a service to AGC members, the mold taskforce is developing a response team.

Membership:  The following services need to be available to members when responding to a mold claim.

  • Industrial Hygienist:  Required to evaluate conditions as well as types of mold present, as well as extent of damage.

  • Mold Remediation Expert:  Based on findings of hygienist, determine most effective clean up method.

  • Construction Attorney:  Assist member in minimizing liability exposure from mold claims.

  • Environmental Insurance Expert:  Although, after an incident occurs, it may be too late to discuss aspects of coverage, providing a resource for members to determine the most effective mold insurance for their situation.

The goal of this taskforce will be to determine the top people or organizations in each category based on selected criteria and priorities and negotiate standardized agreements with them.   In return for access to AGC members, potential members of the rapid response team would agree to use a standardized contract and fee structure for members, in addition to agreeing to specific response times from initial contact by members.  Design will be similar to AGC environmental response agreements.

If you are an AGC member and either have input for the team, or are a member and offer any of the above services, please contact Gert Grohmann at AGC of Greater Milwaukee.

AGC of Greater Milwaukee will keep you updated on a regular basis on this critical issue for our industry as events warrant.  If you have any questions or if there are any ideas or information that you would like to share, please feel free to contact Gert Grohmann at 414-778-4100 or at ggrohmann@agc-gm.org.
